Imagine you know a secret — a magical secret so powerful it could solve any problem in the world. Would you use it straight away, or would you wait for just the right moment? This is the question at the heart of The Magic Fishbone. The story follows Princess Alicia, the eldest daughter of King Watkins — a kind but rather hopeless father with nineteen children and far too little money. When a fairy godmother gifts Alicia a magic fishbone that can grant one single wish, the real choice begins. Life in the royal household grows harder and harder, and the King simply cannot manage. Around every corner, it seems like the perfect moment to use the wish — and yet Alicia keeps waiting. But why? What is she waiting for? ****************************Charles Dickens, who wrote this story in 1868, is one of the most celebrated authors in the English language. He is famous for beloved novels such as Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, and Great Expectations — stories that champion the poor, the young, and the overlooked. Dickens knew from personal experience what it meant to struggle; as a boy, he was sent to work in a factory when his family fell into debt. The Magic Fishbone was written for his own children's magazine, with playful tone, quite unlike anything Dickens wrote for grown-ups.
