今時今日，公司作為市場的主要參與者已經壯大，公司由法人觀念帶動，轉化為有限度負債觀念，經歷管理階層與股東分家，逐漸擴大融資渠道，再轉化為以未來市佔率為經、以槓桿金融為緯的複雜組織。這些變化，改變了公司與市場的關係，以及公司與政府和科技的關係。我們若不徹底了解現代公司的組織和結構的特色，是不容易了解市場、政府與科技的本質。換句話說，現代公司是市場的〝深層結構〞(deep structure)。
但現代公司背後卻蘊含著整個西方的理性主義及西方價值觀，包括以組織為經、程序為緯、效果本位、效率至上、法理規則為基礎等概念。整體來說，公司的力量是西方文化力量的縮影，亦即是說，西方文化是現代公司的〝深層結構〞。
在書中，作者結合經濟學與文化學的分析工具，建立一個有充分能力解釋當前經濟現象的典範架構 (economic paradigm)，透視人類經濟未來發展的命運，為經濟學與文化學的融匯起了示範的作用。
