有關商人與政權關係、商人參政研究，中外成果甚多，但能以商會、商人團體作個案來討論的，還不多見。清末中國因施行商法，商人地位被肯定，有學者認為由於商人支持辛亥革命，辛亥革命成功，亦等於中國資產階級 (bourgeoisie) 革命成功，這說法是值得商榷的。過去學者對中國商人「階級化」和硬套「資產階級」之標籤，也是不對的。有關商人的代表性、政治地位等問題，最引人注意的，莫過於對市民社會 (civil society) 曾否在中國出現的爭論。爭論的焦點在於政府對商人的管理和控制、商人參與政治等問題。中國自改革開放後出現的對政治改革的訴求，有關民間商會地位問題，又重新引起了關注。到底，商人是熱心公益、愛國？還是唯利是圖、喜歡投機？當然，不能一概而論。本書收錄共七篇文章，都以商會為討論對象，並與國家政權的關係來進行分析的。本書附有〈中國商會、商人團體史研究文獻目錄〉，收錄中、英、日文資料約五百條。

李培德編

李培德，於香港大學亞洲研究中心從事有關中國近代經濟史和商業史研究十多年，目前在進行的研究計劃包括：中國銀行業發展史、上海的銀行家、香港銀行廣告史、漢冶萍公司史與日本借款關係等。
