Most books written during the Victorian era describe grand townhouses, formal tea parties, and strict social rules. However, Emily Brontë completely ignored the traditional topics that women were expected to write about at the time. She chose to explore powerful ideas about personal freedom, deep sorrow, and the independence of the human mind. This selection of twenty poems is the perfect starting point to discover a truly remarkable writer who valued freedom above all else.****************************Born in 1818, Emily Brontë spent her life in a quiet stone house in Yorkshire, surrounded by wild, windswept hills called the moors. On the outside, she lived a peaceful and very private life. On the inside, she possessed a massive, brilliant imagination. When they were growing up, Emily and her sisters, Charlotte and Anne, invented a huge imaginary world called 'Gondal'. It was a fictional setting filled with dramatic battles, fallen kingdoms, and complicated heroes who made their own rules. Writing these exciting stories together helped Emily practise creating highly dramatic poetry. Because of this, many of the poems in this book are written from the viewpoints of her imaginary characters. This gives her verses a strong, cinematic feeling, which makes them stand out from standard Victorian poems.
