What would it be like to grow up not in a house but in a wolf’s den, taught to hunt by a bear and guided by a black panther? That is the life of Mowgli, the small boy at the heart of The Jungle Book, Rudyard Kipling’s collection of stories set in the forests of India. Abandoned as a baby and adopted by a wolf pack, Mowgli grows up governed by the Law of the Jungle. Mowgli must work out where he truly belongs, caught between the human village and the only family he has ever known. Alongside Mowgli's adventures, Kipling also included other animal tales in this collection, including a brave mongoose defending his household in ‘Rikki-Tikki-Tavi’ and a young seal searching for a safer home in ‘The White Seal’. Beneath the talking animals and jungle adventure, there lies a set of rules for living well.****************************Kipling had a lifelong fascination with India and its wildlife, rooted in his own childhood in Bombay, where he was born in 1865. Although The Jungle Book was written years later, while Kipling was living in the United States with his American wife, he drew heavily on memories of India and on Indian folktales. The Jungle Book was first published in 1894, followed a year later by The Second Jungle Book, and the two novels were an immediate success. Kipling is also known for Kim and Just So Stories, and in 1907 he won the Nobel Prize in Literature.
