Gulliver's Travels is a late work by Jonathan Swift published in 1726. The book is a narrative of four traveling experiences of Captain Lemuel Gulliver. Gulliver is a surgeon sailing in the South Pacific. During the voyage, a shipwreck occurs and he is washed ashore, drifting to Lilliput. He is surprised to find the residents all less than 15cm tall. It takes great effort of Gulliver, a giant, to remain a harmonious relationship with them.. On his second adventure, he is left on Brobdingnag, a kingdom of giants. Because of his tiny size, Gulliver is treated as a precious treasure. Part three is a voyage to 5 islands, including Laputa, a flying island with a custom of throwing stones down at cities on the ground. The last part is a voyage meeting Houyhnhnms, a race of talking horses. They take control of the whole society, and other creatures resembling human beings are called Yahoos. Attributed to this novel, the term Yahoo has been defined in dictionary as "a rude, noisy, or violent person".
Gulliver's Travels got very popular upon release. The plot is interesting and dramatic, unveiling problems in politics as well as humanity. It has been described as a satire, a children's story and proto-science fiction. Over the centuries since its publication, it has been translated into dozens of languages and is widely circulated around the world.
