Anton Chekhov is often considered the greatest short story writer in the world. He listened more closely than anyone else – to silences, to hesitations, to the small, ordinary crises of everyday life. He transformed the short story by stripping away grand plots and obvious moral lessons, replacing them with vivid, lifelike glimpses of the world in which everything important happens quietly: in a pause, a glance, or a half-finished sentence. His skill lies in what he suggests rather than what he states directly, in the delicate gap between what characters say and what they really feel. From early pieces such as ‘The Huntsman’ to later masterworks like ‘The Lady with the Dog’ and ‘The Student’, Chekhov’s stories turn the events of ordinary life into moments of revelation. This selection brings together twenty of Chekhov’s most important short stories to show both the breadth of his work and the consistency of his vision.****************************Anton Chekhovwas born in Taganrog, Russia in 1860. He grew up under the harsh rule of a strict father, spending long hours working in the family shop. When the family fell into debt, they moved to Moscow, and Anton was left behind to finish school alone. He put himself through medical school by writing comic sketches for newspapers and magazines – a remarkable achievement. He qualified as a doctor in 1884 and famously joked that medicine was his ‘lawful wife’ and literature his ‘mistress’, meaning that while doctoring paid the bills, it was writing that truly captured his heart. He studied people as a doctor and wrote about them as an artist. Tuberculosis, a serious lung disease, cut his life short in 1904 at a German health resort. He was only forty-four, yet he had already produced a body of stories unmatched for their insight, variety, and enduring human truth.
