He drifted between Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York, scraping a living as a literary critic and magazine editor, admired for his brilliance but dogged by poverty and personal loss. The death of his young wife Virginia cast a long shadow over his final years. Poe died in 1849 under mysterious circumstances, aged just forty. He was a man of extraordinary sensitivity living at the edge of sanity, channelling his grief and fears into fiction of timeless power. That power has only grown since his death. Poe is now regarded as a founding father of the modern short story, the horror genre, and the detective story.
