The South Pacific Ocean is often pictured as a calm paradise of turquoise waters and swaying palm trees. However, in this collection of adventure stories, A Son of the Sun, this vast region is in fact a world full of danger, high-stakes trade, and rugged characters. At the very heart of these tropical adventures is David Grief, a wealthy English trader who has spent years adapting to the demanding life of the islands. He is remarkably brave, clever, and physically strong, earning him the legendary nickname ‘the Son of the Sun’. Throughout the book, we follow Grief as he sails between remote islands, managing a massive business empire while constantly encountering trouble. In one adventure, he must outsmart ruthless pirates who try to steal his fortune; in another, he faces treacherous business rivals who underestimate his sharp wits. The stories are filled with tense standoffs, shipwrecks, and narrow escapes. ****************************The incredible realism of these stories comes directly from Jack London’s own adventurous life. Born in San Francisco in 1876, London worked as a sailor, a gold prospector in the freezing Klondike, and a war journalist. In 1907, London decided to build his own yacht, the Snark, and sail across the South Pacific. During this two-year voyage, he visited the islands described in A Son of the Sun. He contracted tropical diseases, met real-life island traders, and witnessed the harsh realities of ocean life. David Grief is largely based on the people London met and the ultimate survivor he wished he could be.
