A distinguished single-author poetry collection in free verse. The poet is serious in understanding people, relationships, languages, cultures, religions and the meaning of existence. She has lived in Taiwan, Mainland China, the USA and Germany as well as Hong Kong. Her work reflects these interests./ The poems are lyrical and analytical, showing great skill in language. They refer to international and local events and personalities, ideas and philosophies. It is a rich collection. It cannot be read in one sitting but must be savoured over time, and more than once if justice is to be done to the ideas and the means by which they are expressed. Skillful and attractive colour photographs by the author are included when new sections begin and add a valuable extra dimension to the work as a whole.

Birgit Bunzel was born and raised in Oberhausen, an industrial city in the Ruhr Valley. She left Germany in the 1980s, and has since lived in Taiwan, China, America, and Hong Kong. She taught Chinese and Comparative Literary Studies at the City University of Hong Kong. Later she taught at Lingnan University. She won the International Proverse Prize for Poetry in 2012.

In 2016, Proverse launched theannual international Proverse Poetry Prize for a single poem submitted in English. Both prizes open for entries no later than 7 May each year (closing date 30 June). Entries to both prizes are invited from anywhere in the world and are open to all over eighteen years old, whatever their nationality, residence or citizenship. Writers and poets from Hong Kong and many countries in the world participate. Winners have been both local and international.Beginning in 2009 and continuing, Proverse organises in central Hong Kong a Spring and an Autumn literary event, open to the public. In recent years, a parallel event, available internationally, is shown on Youtube.Of the titles published by Proverse, several have attracted a Preface or advance appreciation from figures of international reputation.
