此選集編者為朱祖謀，原名朱孝臧，為「清末四大家」之一，專工於詞，在八國聯軍時期，填寫了許多抒發壯懷零落、國土淪喪的詞作，例如《夜飛鵲．香港秋眺》。他在晚年時精心考量了詞作的體格，不持門戶之見廣納名篇，編撰了渾成典雅，極富代表性的《宋詞三百首》。
