《大学》原是《礼记》第四十二篇，阐述个人修养与社会政治的关系。首篇「经一章」就是三纲领与八条目，由个人之「明明德」（格物，致知，诚意，正心，修身）做起；发挥到「亲民」（齐家，治国，平天下），以达到「止于至善」的境地；之后十章皆为逐一详释「经一章」之三纲领与八条目。
