《大學》原是《禮記》第四十二篇，闡述個人修養與社會政治的關係。首篇「經一章」就是三綱領與八條目，由個人之「明明德」（格物，致知，誠意，正心，修身）做起；發揮到「親民」（齊家，治國，平天下），以達到「止於至善」的境地；之後十章皆為逐一詳釋「經一章」之三綱領與八條目。
