《閱微草堂筆記》為清朝短篇志怪小說，翰林院庶吉士出身的紀曉嵐以筆記型式編寫而成。他搜輯當時各種鄉野怪談，或親身所聽聞的奇情軼事，主題為因果報應、勸善懲惡及狐鬼神仙等故事，搜輯範圍遍及全中國，遠至烏魯木齊、伊寧，南至滇黔等地。

紀曉嵐，名昀，道號觀弈道人、孤石老人等。乾隆三十年（1765年），因捲入鹽政虧空案，獲罪被發配新疆，於沿途與當地人交流，曰「如是我聞」，寫了不少的作品，後整理成此書。其後，紀曉嵐回京任兵部尚書，又任禮部尚書。嘉慶十年（1805年），任協辦大學士、加太子少保。同年在京師病卒。
