Les Misérables is a French historical novel by Victor Hugo, set between 1815 and the 1832 June Rebellion in Paris, It ranks among the greatest novels of all time.
Victor Hugo takes readers deep into the Parisian underworld. The novel follows the lives and interactions of several characters : the struggles and redemption of ex-convict Jean Valjean, the desperation of the prostitute Fantine and her innocent daughter Cosette, the amorality of the rogue Thénardier and the universal desire to escape the prisons of our own minds. The novel elaborates upon the history of France, justice, religion, and the nature of romantic and familial love.
According to the author: "The book is a progress from evil to good, from falsehood to truth, from bestiality to duty, from hell to heaven." The extravagant spectacle dazzles the senses and has touched hearts worldwide since its publication.
