《儒林外史》是一部清代小說，主題圍繞一班「知識份子」，登場人物達二百多個，以多篇短篇故事串連成一部有系統的小說。書中情節生動有趣，同時諷刺當時社會，在封建思想與科舉束縛之下，所形成扭曲的社會風氣、極端現象。《儒林外史》全書共五十六回，編者分為上、下兩卷，上卷收錄第一至三十回。

作者吳敬梓天資聰敏，曾中秀才，但後來科舉不順，最終潦倒一生。他出身官宦家庭，自幼周旋於名士、商紳之間，其後家道中落，見盡世態炎涼，發憤寫成《儒林外史》，藉藝術批評封建思想，其推動進步的精神，對後來的文學創作影響深遠。
